A sterling silver and vitreous enamel cigarette case. This wonderful, and exceptionally rare cigarette case, and quite possible the ultimate accessories for any gambler! It has been beautifully made to look, on both sides, like a roulette table, complete with the betting mat and iconic wheel. The lid has a sprung push button clasp to open it. Being a larger size case, it will still not hold today's cigarettes vertically in the case, but they will fit at an angle. It is, however, a perfect fit for mini cigars, or even joints!
The piece was made in America for Cartier USA by the Thomae Company. Thoame were a well known contractor for sterling pieces for Cartier, and started his company in 1920, and is still in business today. The piece bears both the "TC" makers mark and the Cartier stamp both on the underneath, and the back middle, along with "Sterling". Thomae. During this period on Cartier's history there were a number of pieces that were made in the US for Cartier using a select group of very skilled workshops, Thomae being one. A very small number of their pieces come to market from time to time, so like the Paris and London counterparts, the production numbers were very small indeed. Being that there was no workshop for Cartier in New York for such pieces, they were always outsourced.
The condition of the piece is excellent throughout. There is no damage to the enamel, no damage to the corners, or any dents to the body. This is very rare for a cigarette case that was intended for extensive use every day. It was cherished by whomever received it, and as a result of which it is presented today in immaculate condition.
Made in America, circa 1935
